Beating the heat was a common theme at last month’s unforgettable Wakarusa Music & Camping Festival at Clinton Lake State Park in Lawrence. Leave it to Ozomatli, though, to lead the way and show everyone how to beat the heat by embracing the beat. Following on the trailblazing heels of bands like Los Lobos and representing the next generation of the East LA music scene, Ozo laid down a layer of rhythm, horns, and hip-hop that left the ‘Rusa crowd drenched with sweat and screaming for “mas!”
While the highlights included these two hard-hitting numbers as well as a set-ending parade of percussion that brought the band from the stage into the crowd, the party didn’t end there. A second set started up later that night at 2:15 in the morning and didn’t finish off until nearly 4am! [Download the entire set via BitTorrent here. For a BT how-to, go here.]
