Cloak & Dagger/PCs & Macs
So, what’s with the password-protected post? I can’t say just yet, but it’s a pretty exciting new idea I’m exploring with regard to my freelance music writing activities, spurred on by my recent trip to ad:tech. As soon as I can say more, I will. But for now, some things will have to remain behind the curtain.
However, that doesn’t mean I can’t bring you some other kinds of fun. A few weeks ago I sat and watched Pirates of Silicon Valley for the first time. Though it’s been out since 1999, it’s a flick that I highly recommend if you have the least bit of interest in the early history of the PC wars. When I saw this post over at Crawlspace the other day, it brought the topic back to mind. Check the YouTubage Jharr posted over there…
…and then check out this great little parody ad that I caught out in San Fran at the closing keynote, which was a live recording of the online series “Internet Superstar.”
On a sidenote, my dad was in a unique position at Hallmark when a lot of the original PC wars stuff was really heating up in the early 1980s and believes that he has the distinction of writing the first equipment requisition for a Macintosh at Hallmark back around 1984. (That same year he also got one for use at home, which was no small investment.) Some of the stories he tells of gathering together artists and creative heads and informing them that their process of creation would forever change in a few short years and that their pen or paintbrush would soon be augmented with and, in some mediums, maybe even replaced by a mouse are a riot. Needless to say, he was laughed out of a lot of meetings at the time.
Whenever he thinks back on those days, he always busts out with a huge grin. That probably explains a lot when it comes to why I like working in the realm of emerging technology and communication.
