The Weekend That Was
Man, it was definitely a busy weekend!

Kicking off things Friday night was Quixotic Fusion at the Uptown Theatre. The show was an amazing amalgam of music, dance, art and aerial acrobatics that totally blew the socks off the missus and I. And for me, the most incredible aspect of the production is that it comes from the hearts and imaginations of local Kansas City artists banding together to pull off a show that would easily rival something you would be more apt to see on the coasts. Anyone who wants to call KC flyover country absolutely needs to take another look when something as spectacular as this springs to life in the heartland.

Saturday was spent out at the new revamped Sandstone Amphitheatre for the annual Red, White & Boom concert. Not normally my musical bag, I covered the event for the Pitch and took along my older brother, his 13 year-old daughter and her best friend. With a lineup of acts that were basically unknown to me (except “American Idol” winner Jordin Sparks), I went in with meager expectations and was pleasantly surprised by acts like Metro Station, Boys Like Girls, and Gavin DeGraw. Not that I’m going to run out and buy any new music from these cats, but it was definitely cool to see a young audience (like the girl pictured above) digging on live music. You can read my review of the show here. And if you’re looking for a ton of photos, cruise on over to my Flickr photo set.
Sunday morning and early afternoon was mostly spent on deadline for the Pitch review but towards the late afternoon I was able to start in on the the teardown of the rotten piece of shite that’s attached to the back of our house and has passed as a deck for the past 4 years. I recently was able to secure a nice little home equity line of credit thanks to some nimble work on my bro’s part and we’re looking forward to a new deck and some much needed kitchen improvements. Given the market it’s not likely we’re going to be selling our house any time soon, so making due with what has actually been a sweet find of a first home is the best plan at this point.
With any luck, I’ll be able to squeeze a new grill out of this whole deal as well.
