Round Tree Design Gets Inked

A good friend of mine and frequent partner-in-crime when it comes to freelance web work, Tim O’Neill, was recently featured in Kansas City’s Ink magazine. Besides being a top notch illustrator and web designer, his pride and passion squarely resides in designing and executing custom furniture, fixtures and outdoor spaces. Be sure to check out his site RoundTreeDesign.com for a virtual trunkload of amazing work.

This ongoing Ink feature is about interesting office spaces. Tim’s attic home studio was painstakingly pulled together from found and recovered materials, which is also a reflection of his philosophical belief in “green design” and sustainable practices.

The layout of the web version of the feature isn’t that great, so I scanned in a copy of the print version too.

And for the record, I confess; I helped him jack that street sign.

  1. What is the biggest challenge you face as a web designer?

Biggest challenge? Matching vision for a client with an appropriate level of compensation. I always want to do more than what I’m being paid for and typically end up investing much more into my projects than what is healthy and ultimately profitable. Layer that on top of having a day gig and you have a recipe for long hours and little pay.

However, somewhere along the way the love for the medium kicks in and sets things right for the sake of morale.
