DIY Files: 2009 Honda Fit Trailer Hitch Install
This past summer, one of the first things I did to my new 2009 Honda Fit was to add an aftermarket no-drill trailer hitch. I had no delusions of being able to tow a bass boat or anything…I just wanted to be able to throw on a Thule bike rack. Thanks to the good folks at etrailer.com, I found this nice little Draw-Tite number. A short, week-long wait later, the trailer was delivered straight to my casa. After an hour and a half on a beautiful Saturday afternoon, it was all installed and ready to roll. Apart from a little filing to widen the frame holes that would accommodate the mounting bolts, it was a pretty easy deal.
So why blog about this now 9 months later? Someone must have Googled “2009 Honda Fit Hitch Install” and found my Flickr photoset. I thought I’d leave another little bit of Google bait for anyone else looking for similar info. Enjoy!

I love etrailer.com – bought the hitch for my old Explorer on there – great prices and easy to use.
I’m looking to buy a honda fit, and I’ll need a trailer hitch. Want to tow my utility trailer with a 12′ fishing boat. Nice to know there are hitches for these cars.
By the way, how do you like your fit? I’d be going from a 2009 Toyota camry to a 2010 fit sport. I’d like to know if they are a fun caar to drive? got enough power to get you moving?
@Marty: I would be a little concerned about hauling anything heavy. Be sure to check the weight capacity for the hitch in relation to what you want to do. That and the engine isn’t huge to begin with, so I suspect that engine strain should be a concern too.
I love my Fit for what I ask it to do. It’s fun to drive, gets great mileage and has some real nice comfort features. Power-wise it’s nothing to write home about…but that wasn’t a key consideration for me.
Hope that helps!
Thanks for this post! I was looking for a hitch for the same purpose of mounting a bike rack. I know the fit manual specifically says “NO TOWING” so I thought there might not be a hitch bar. But there it is!
I’ll add my thanks, not only for the blog, but for the references and detailed flickr photos. I just ordered a draw-tite from etrailer on your advice.

awesome–thanks. Any advice on whether a 1.25 or 2 inch hitch is better? And any advice on the bike rack?
Some belated follow-up. I’ve had the hitch for nearly a year.
I used a yakima two-bike rack and have been very happy with it. It tilts easily for hatch access. The hitch and rack extend far enough and are low enough that they do drag (well, likely it is the rack dragging) whenever I exit a barking lot with any deep gutters or much pitch. I manage that by hitting them at an angle. Still an excellent solution for my needs.
Thanks! I’m considering this one from costco: http://www.costco.com/Browse/ProductSet.aspx?Prodid=11531456&cm_mmc=BCEmail_HomeMailer2011-_-Banner-_-69-_-MarketingItemName
Well reviewed, and on sale right now. The hitch appeals to me because it’s versatile. I’m hoping to figure out an easy kayaking solution, too (I’m a 5’3″ woman; yes, even the Fit is too tall for me to put stuff on the roof).
Hey Marty, I have a 2010 Honda Fit Sport. I had a 2009 Toyota Camry as well. I love the Camry, but now that I have my Fit I love it as well, however for different reasons. Great on Gas, and it has very usable Utility Value. Can’t go Wrong with the Fit. And don’t forget the Magic Seats in the back. No other competitor out there can even get close.
