Ask An Interactivist (Guest Edition): Facebook @ Tagging

In today’s edition, we have a guest contributor: Paul Jarrett. As the programs chair for the Lincoln AAF and as a marketing manager at Nebraska Book Company, Paul is very active in exploring and experimenting with social media applications for marketing and promotional purposes. [Disclosure: the Nebraska Book Company is one of my current clients.]

While Facebook’s @tag feature has been out for a little while now, the functionality still hasn’t quite caught on and been employed as much as it could be. The tutorial below is a great step-by-step explanation Paul put together on both the “how-to” as well as the benefits of this Facebook feature.

“This has been a very powerful tool for the AAF Lincoln executive board when it comes to promoting events. I was surprised at how many people don’t get how to do this.”

Tagging in Facebook
The more “@” tags used in your Facebook status bar (6 is the max) the higher your status will rank. This will provide AAF Lincoln with better reach and frequency as your AAF Lincoln news will rank higher in the public news feed and it will be posted to whoever/whatever you “@” tagged.

Step #1
Go to your status bar.

Step #2
Write your status but before mentioning a particular group, page or person, include the “@” sign before the name.

Step #3
Continue to type your message and tag up to 6 groups, pages or people.

Step #4
Click “Share” and check out your fancy work in your status!

Step #5
Check your news feed… It worked youʼre #1!
