Dennis Hopper and Find the Cost of Freedom
Some say Apocalypse Now. Others say Blue Velvet. A few might even say Speed. Concerning Dennis Hopper, for me it was always Easy Rider. Funny story I heard about that flick was that Crosby, Stills & Nash offered up “Find The Cost Of Freedom” for the violently abrupt closing sequence of that film to Peter Fonda.
In my mind, I could see and hear that kicking in around 1:43 of the clip below. But apparently Fonda passed, prompting one of the guys to say he “just didn’t get it.”
But 41 years after that film was released, and upon hearing the news of Hopper’s death, I can think of no better song to associate him with. And this version with David Crosby, Graham Nash and David Gilmour plays out like a prayer.
Dennis Hopper had his moments, but I’ve tried to go back and watch Easy Rider, and it doesn’t hold up too well. It fit for its time, but it’s just boring if you watch it now.
